Summary

In Part Two, “The Lakes,” “Day One: St. Bees to Ennerdale Water,” “The Wigan Orgy,” Marnie takes the train to St. Bees. On the way, she proofreads her newest assignment, an erotic thriller called Twisted Night. The writing is confusing and Marnie’s mind wanders to the last time she had sex. She puts away the manuscript and considers reading, but naps instead.

In “A Connection,” Michael studies his fellow train passengers while reflecting on the upcoming walk. He dreads being around Cleo’s friends. Then he studies a woman reading her laptop. They bump into each other on the platform and Michael rushes away.

In “Names for Stones,” Marnie meets up with Cleo and her friends. She introduces Marnie to Sam’s friend Conrad and her friend Michael. Sam could not come, but Anthony is along. Marnie notices...
