Summary
In Part Three, “The Dales,” “The Black Dog,” Michael regrets asking Marnie to keep walking. The two barely talk all morning. In the afternoon, they settle into their rooms at the Black Dog. Alone, he thinks about Natasha, but reminds himself to focus on “the here and now” (194).
In “The Cannibal in the Wardrobe,” Marnie tries working, but is distracted by thoughts of Michael. She is glad when he knocks on her door and they head out to eat. At the restaurant, the older couple from the trail, Brian and Barbara, join Marnie and Michael. Meanwhile, Marnie receives a text from Conrad asking to get drinks when she returns to London.
In “Day Five: Shap to Kirkby Stephen,” “Random Shuffle,” Marnie and Michael return to the trail. They decide to share headphones and listen to music.
