Part Three, The Wilderness: Chapters 7-9 Summary

Duff abandons his calendar. Sean digs out four bottles of Chateau Olivier he saved, trying to cheer him up, but Duff rants and rages against God. He has a nightmare and fear follows him into the daylight. He asks Sean to stay and play cards instead of hunting, but tires and asks Sean to read to him instead. Sweating, he lays still listening and after a while the rhythm of Bleak House lulls Sean to sleep. A tinkle from Duff's chain wakes him. Duff is crouching, madness in his eyes. He lunges for Sean making noises that curdle him. He watches, paralyzed, snapping out of it when Duff finds the end of his chain. Sean runs out of camp into the bush, running until his brain slows his panic. Then he returns, circling...
