Summary

Chapter 18 begins as Wallace refuses to tell anyone what happened and slips into denial. Eventually, Hugo pulls him aside and gets Wallace to scream until he can handle telling him the truth. This leads to Hugo begging that the Manager return, but the Manager does not show. Wallace tries to say that he has accepted his death, but Mei says it is much more than that now. As she and Hugo go to bed, Nelson thanks Wallace for all that he has done and tells him to be proud. Wallace says he is scared, and Nelson asks Wallace what might have happened had he met Hugo before his death. Wallace says he would have messed things up, but Nelson says that is the beauty of life. The next morning, however, Wallace is crippled by depression.
