Summary

Chapter One opens as Patricia cries in front of her boss, Wallace Price. However, she seems grateful to him while he thinks of how well he has gotten his employees to work for his clients. Patricia thanks him for caring and sending her flowers, and Wallace realizes his assistant must have done it without telling him. Patricia says her husband, Kyle, was laid off and is having difficulties finding work as her son is getting married. Wallace, who sees children as a distraction, is surprised to learn that they gave Patricia's daughter a scholarship. She mentions how everyone thinks Wallace is cold and aggressive but she sees him as a good person before going into her marital and family problems.
