Galadriel "El" Higgins

El is the main character and narrator of the story. She was conceived when her parents were seniors at the Scholomance school. Her father had sacrificed himself to Patience, the maw-mouth, in order to give his girlfriend and their unborn baby a life outside the gates. When she was born, El’s mother took her to see her father’s family, but her paternal grandmother—a seer—announced that El would be the evilest maleficer of all time, and that she would destroy the world. El’s mother had taken her back to England and had raised her in a commune. As she got older, El did indeed start to exhibit alarming magical abilities, but her mother always stayed by her side and told her that she could be whoever she wanted to be.
