Naomi Novak’s A Deadly Education is the first novel in The Scholomance series for young adults. Witches and wizards who live secretly throughout Earth are sent to The Scholomance, a school without any teachers that simultaneously protects students from the monsters who roam through the world, and attracts the monsters, who feed off magical creatures, to the school. El is at the end of her junior year at the Scholomance, and all she wants is to survive without turning into the evil sorceress she has been prophesied to become. When a chance-encounter with the most popular boy in school brings the two together as friends, her whole world changes. The novel explores ostracism, classism, morality, balance, and the savior trope.
