Part Three, A Puzzle in a Puzzle: Chapters 71-84 Summary

Rotenhausen unstraps Joanna from the bed, convinced she is too drugged to get away. Joanna surprises him by unplugging his mechanical hand and jumping off the bed. Rotenhausen manages to catch Joanna before she can reach the door. Joanna and Rotenhausen struggle, and she is able to get free. Joanna grabs an IV bottle from a tray, but it breaks when Rotenhausen grabs her again. Joanna still has the end of the bottle in her hand. Joanna sinks the broken end of the bottle into Rotenhausen's neck, killing him. At the same time, Alex escapes Carrera's grip and runs into a storm room.
