Summary

In Chapter 1, Hannah Jones de Chastaigne believed she should have known something was wrong when she saw the door of the dorm room she shared with April Clarke-Cliveden was open. She did not remember anything else after that. Hannah had been told that she screamed and Hugh ran up the stairs to help her.

Sometimes, Hannah had nightmares in which she saw April’s body differently than it had appeared in the crime scene photos. In this image, April’s cheeks were still colored as if she was alive and her body was laying “almost theatrically” (2) on the floor.

In Chapter 2, Hannah is working when her mother calls to tell her that John Neville has died in jail. Hannah has to fight the urge not to cry. She tells her mother she has a customer as an excuse to hang up the phone...
