Point of View
The novel is told from numerous third person points of view, each providing a different glimpse into the mystery as well as into the psychological makeup of the characters. When the story is narrated by Louise, the reader learns about Barbara’s disappearance. Since Louise was not there the night Barbara disappeared, her narration cannot give any clues into what happened to the girl aside from the fact that Barbara was not involved. Her point of view also shows how poor mothering can alienate children but also that children can grow beyond their parenting if they choose to do so.
Judy’s point of view tells the story of the search for Barbara. Her sections also detail what was happening in the community when Bear disappeared because she talks to people who were around at that time. She does not know what happened to Barbara...
