Summary

In Chapter 3, Connor is unable to tell the police anything except that he had heard a boat on the lake about 9 p.m. Lanny does not want to talk to the police. When she does, she admits she had heard a splash. When she looked out the window, she saw a small white boat. Gwen worries that Lanny will have to testify in a trial and briefly considers packing up and leaving. When her children ask her if they have to leave, she sees the dread in their eyes. She makes up her mind that they will stay where they are.

Things are quiet for a few days, and Gwen’s anxiety begins to lessen until Absalom sends her a newspaper article about the murder at Stillhouse Lake. He claims not to know where she is and says he is sending it to her...
