Chapters 1-3 Summary

Chapter 1. The Skara Rok. Plain Kate's mother died when she was born. When her father introduced her to everyone, he said her name was Katerina Svelana, but he calls her just plain Kate. For this reason, everyone in town began to call her Plain Kate. Plain Kate's father is a master carver and put a knife in her hand when she was only three. Plain Kate has helped her father with most of his work and promises him she will be a master carver by the time she is twenty. However when the skara rok, the bad time, came, Plain Kate's father died of the witch's fever. A short time later, a new master carver comes to live in the home Plain Kate shared with her father.
