Chapters 7 through 13 Summary

In Chapter 7, after a couple of days of hunger, the boys finally give in and eat the rat and worm soup. Even now that they have given in to their hunger, the soup is not enough. One night, Peter decides to steal some food for the boys, and sneaks aft. When he comes to the aft hold, he finds a sleeping guard, and figures that this must be where they keep the decent food. Instead, he sees the trunk, and a flying rat suspended mid air above it. The sailor wakes up and goes into the hold, only to trip over Peter. They both are mesmerized by the flying rat, and are motionless.
