Melody Brooks
Melody Brooks is the middle grade protagonist of the novel. She has cerebral palsy, but she does not let this stop her from doing much of what it is that she wants to do. One of the major lessons she learns throughout the novel is that she can be a role model for other people. As the novel opens, she is feeling a bit despondent because she misses camp, she does not want to go back to school, and she is reliant on her mother to help her get ready for the day. This changes when she sees her elderly neighbor fall and is able to get her the help she needs. Melody does not believe that her actions are that remarkable, but other people do.
