The Role of Technology in Society

The author argues that technology plays an important role in society. As such, technology cannot be avoided. It can be used for both good and evil.

On the side of evil, “high-tech” tools have allowed the Mafia to devise a new drug-smuggling method (258). They are now able to have cans which contain drugs dropped into the water because they “have the exact GPS location for both the beginning and end of the string” (258). Then, they have a wand that transmits “a low-frequency sound…that will be picked up by the cans. That will turn on bright white LEDs on the outside of the cans” (258). Technology almost causes the deaths of Rae and Virgil because Cattaneo is able to receive a call, even though he is on a boat.

On the side of good, technology helps the law-enforcement authorities capture the members...
