Summary

In Chapter 13, Marra and her friends decided to find a place to stay. Agnes bought a chick and cursed the little bird with the ability to find them somewhere safe. The chick took them to a boarding house where a woman, Miss Margaret, rented rooms. She had a wooden puppet (or curse-child) sitting on her shoulder and holding a cord around her throat. Agnes fainted from all the magic she had used cursing the chick. Miss Margaret led everyone upstairs, but every time she tried to talk, the puppet choked her. Once they were in their room, Marra insisted they leave, but the dust-wife explained that the puppet was just a toy who Margaret had become too attached to as a child, so it had come to life and now acted like a god in control of her.
