Summary

Chapter 10 picks up in 2008. Through her online research, Lucky learns Gloria Devereaux runs the Devereaux Camp. She finds a phone number but cannot bring herself to talk to the woman who identifies herself as Gloria. She has the lottery ticket taped to her skin and it “anchored her to an alternate future” (121). She buys a bus ticket to Fresno where she rents a storage locker, picking up a couple of boxes from a dumpster to make it look legitimate. She hides the lottery ticket inside and writes a grocery list to remember the entry code.

The next chapter is titled “August 1999, Sausalito, California.” Lucky and “Alex” (who is really Cary) become close, spending a lot of time together. He says his parents died in a plane crash when he was young. They talk about movies, books, and their plans for the future...
