Summary

In Chapter 9, which takes place in 2008, Lucky randomly chooses to go to Baker City, Oregon. She thinks about people from her past. She reads an article about the continued manhunt for Alaina Cadence and David Ferguson. Lucky remembers the day she gave the money to the homeless woman. She had told Cary she was trying to help people who needed it. Now she reexamines herself. She looks at the lottery ticket, imagining using the money to repay people, starting with the 20 clients she and Cary stole from in Idaho. She adds Steph and Darla to the list, planning to “pay them back for all the lies she and her father had told” (97). She writes Gloria's name on the list.
