Summary

The Prologue is titled “February 1982; New York City.” A young apprentice nun named Margaret Jean is on duty at the nunnery, the first time she has been left in charge. She hears a baby cry just outside the door. She waits, hoping someone else will take care of the situation. Knowing it is brutally cold out, she finally goes to the door. The baby is wrapped in pink. Just then, a man arrives and picks up the baby. He identifies himself as John. He says is wife is suffering from depression after giving birth to the baby. When he arrived home, his wife said she left the baby somewhere, and he has been walking around, hoping to find his daughter, Luciana. He asks her not to call the police, promises to get help for his wife, and asks for help buying formula...
