Summary

Chapter 5 picks up in 2008. Lucky gets on a tour bus headed for the Grand Canyon. She knows authorities are not likely to search for a fugitive on a tour bus. A man seems particularly interested in her. She goes to the bathroom and divides her money, hiding some in her bra, shoes, and bag. When they arrive at the tourist site, Lucky breaks from the crowd to walk into town. The man confronts her, says he knows she stole money from Jeremy. She gives him part of it, drops the lottery ticket, and fights him to get his knife. When he is gone, she picks up the lottery ticket, thinking about all the times she bought a ticket as a youngster. She knows “the piece of paper she held was worth nothing,” but she puts it in her pocket anyway (55). The ticket...
