Summary

The narrative returns to Vic being interrogated by Sergeant Mendes. Vic explains to Sergeant Mendes why he loves abstract art. He tells her about the time his dad took him to The Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan and he saw his first Matisse painting. Detective Ronald comes in to share some important information. Mendes instructs him to wait in the room with Vic while she goes to talk with the lieutenant. Detective Ronald picks up Vic's dad's list. He reads aloud the clue, "Drop me from the top of our rock" and asks if that means the observation deck on top of Rockefeller Center" (240). This guess is correct. Vic is surprised by Detective Ron's astuteness and internally re-evaluates him. Sergeant Mendes returns. But Vic is lost in his head, remembering the photograph of his parents on the "Top of the Rock."
