Cell Phone

The cell phone is a symbol of connection. Lena uses her phone to connect with Black, but when hers dies she must rely on Campbell's to track him down. Unexpectedly, the connection that forms as a result of the phone is one between Campbell and Lena, who end the novel by texting one another for the first time through their fully charged phones.

Purse

Lena's Louis Vuitton purse is a symbol of her economic status. When Campbells sees Lena carrying the purse, she immediately realizes that Lena must be wealthy.

Helicopters

The helicopters are a symbol of the biased media. When the protestors are demonstrating peacefully, the media helicopters are nowhere to be found, but when a violent riot occurs, helicopters begin to sweep down on the area to capture footage and present it to viewers.
