Summary

In Chapter 1, Lena leaves class at McPherson High School in Atlanta. She waits for her boyfriend, Black, with her best friend, LaShunda. LaShunda does not like Black, so she leaves. The two girls plan to meet up later at the football game. Black arrives and drives Lena home. She asks if he wants meet her after the halftime show, but he says he is not sure what he is doing that night. Annoyed, she goes inside and makes a snack. Her dad disapproves of Black and says Lena should be dating someone better.

In Chapter 2, Campbell’s dad drops her off at the football game. Campbell had just transferred to McPherson from her school in Connecticut. Her mom had left for a job in Venezuela and had sent her to live with her father. Campbell had lots of friends and ran track back...
