Summary

Chapter 23, the first chapter in Part Three, is from Wren's perspective. She is walking across the desert in the direction the dragon soldiers took Sky. Just as she reaches rocky ground, the dragons pass by, going the other direction. She returns to the dragon city but finds they are not there. She wants to set out for the sand dragons' palace but knows it will take her a long time to walk. She begins scouting for a dragon who will fly her there. She finds a dragon she believes will be reasonable and listens as he and a messenger talk about the possible next target of some dragonets. After the messenger is gone, Wren goes to talk to the dragon, who initially believes he is hallucinating. He says “scavengers” do not speak the language of the dragons.
