Summary

In Chapter 9, they continue their journey and Julian seems to have some knowledge of the game. When Scarlett questions him, he says he has played before. Julian asks if Scarlett would believe he was motivated by concern for her and Tella, but she says she does not. Though he says seeing the game and possibility of winning are enough to motivate anyone, Scarlett believes he has some other motive. Julian says most young ladies would like to be in Scarlett's position, especially with Julian's connection, and says his previous experience could help her. Scarlett wants to leave the island quickly, and believes she will need Julian's help to find Tella.

In Chapter 10, Scarlett is amazed by her first look inside Caraval. She notes dozens of balconies and what seems to be “a miniature kingdom” (Location 970). Scarlett and Julian...
