Summary

The prologue opens by saying that children can always be chased by their shadow, but if they turn around, they will never catch it. One young boy, however, plays with his shadow. He cuts his finger so his shadow can lick his blood because someone on TV said that would make them best friends. The boy says he is Remy and calls his shadow Red.

Chapter One: "Hungry Shadows" shifts to Charlie Hall working her second shift at the bar, Rapture, grateful to be kept out of trouble. She is described as crooked, prone to lying, and an incredible thief trying to change her ways. In walks Doreen Kowalski and the narrator says that those without money rely on a well-crafted network of amateurs for things that professionals usually do. Charlie is a well-known thief in the world of shadow magic...
