Part 1, Natal: Chapters 25-27 Summary
Garry and Anna have been gone two months by the time they return to Theunis Kraal. Ada moves into town, and Anna feels it is probably best as Ada seems to be able to read Anna too clearly, but she says none of this. Anna is taken with the cannas in bloom, gabled roof and shuttered windows. It is mine, she thinks to herself, just as she realizes that someone is standing on the front stoop. Garry and Anna both recognize Sean at the same time as he comes down the steps and into the sun.
During the Chelmsford campaign, Sean scouts ahead, with just four white men on horses, and six Nongaai from Natal. One of them, a Zulu named Mbejane (meaning Rhinoceros) offers to hold his horse as they look for cattle in payment for their participation in this conflict. Mbejane...
