Part One, Joanna: Chapters 18-24 Summary

Joanna lies in bed, overwhelmed with depression over her decision to freeze Alex out of her life. Joanna cannot sleep, so she decides to take some sleeping pills. While pouring out the appropriate dosage, Joanna begins to think how easy it would be to take the whole bottle and simply end her pain. Alex also cannot sleep. Alex has never fallen in love before and honestly does not believe love exists; however, he cannot stop thinking about Joanna and wonders if maybe this is what love feels like. While thinking of these things, Alex gets a call from Mariko informing him that Joanna has attempted to kill herself. Alex rushes to the Moonglow and finds the doctor there with Joanna. Mariko tells Alex that the paramedics have already pumped Joanna's stomach, and her private physician has decided she is safe remaining at her...
