Plain Kate is an orphan girl who is accused of being a witch because of her great ability with a carving knife. After the death of her father, Plain Kate finds herself alone and forced to care for herself, often starving because of her inability to make money from her craft because she is not part of the guild. When a stranger comes to town, Plain Kate presents a perfect target for his desire to steal a shadow.

The stranger, Linay, tells Plain Kate that he wants her shadow and he will give her her heart's desire in exchange. Plain Kate turns him down, but when Linay's magic causes the town to be afraid of her as a witch, she needs to leave town.
