Claire Randall

Claire is the novel's main character. The story is about how Claire - through the standing stones at the Highlands of Scotland - is transported back in time from 1945 to 1743. She finds her sanity and her nursing skills put to the test as she survives this time trying to return to the standing stones so that she may return to her own time. The world around her is completely different than she is used to and she has to find a means of survival. Through her nursing skills she makes a place for herself amongst the clans and townspeople of Scotland.
