Part 5, Chapter 32 Summary

Jamie helps Ian with the harvesting. It is November. Jamie tells Claire that they will need to leave within the next day or two. Harvesting is very hard work and the men usually fall asleep right after supper. Jenny jokes that there are no babies born in July due to lack of men being awake to make them in November.

That night after Claire goes to bed she and Jamie are awakened by Ian. Jenny is in labor and asks Claire if she knows how to deliver a baby. She tells him she does not, and he should get the midwife. Jamie goes to get the midwife, Ian tells Mrs. Crook to prepare something to eat and Claire sits with Jenny as she battles labor pains.
