Chapters 1-5 Summary

Koop is a cat burglar and a killer, on the hunt for a victim. On the way to The Saint, a local bookstore with a scheduled reading, Koop's thoughts wander and he nearly hits a group of people crossing the street. One man calls out with a strange birdlike shout as Koop speeds away, realizing he should be more careful and not draw attention to himself. Koop keeps to a regular careful pattern, but the night before he had seen Sara Jensen and his needs are great. Koop enters The Saint, a local bookstore, and checks out the crowd. Koop's favorite victims are well dressed and expectant, hoping that they will meet Mr. Right.
