Summary

Chapter 1 opens with Ana Dakkar saying the “life-shattering days … start just like any other” (5). She lives on the Harding-Pencroft Academy campus. She is in her final days as a freshman. As always, she meets her brother Dev just after five in the morning. Though he is busy as a senior and the captain at House Shark, Dev always makes time for the dive. Harding-Pencroft, often referred to as HP, is a five-year high school that trains young people for marine-related careers. Their rival high school is the Land Institute, a similar high school with similar goals. Land Institute is often identified as LI. Dev has a couple of squid they will give a bottle nose dolphin they call Socrates. Dev distracts Ana so that he makes the dive first. Ana relishes the 10-story drop from the cliff to the ocean.
