Summary

In Chapter 11, the students secure Caleb and Hewett orders them to get underway. The medics, including Franklin, tend to wounds. The LI students also had Leyden guns, but theirs included small harpoons that inflicted more damage. Ana recovers from the toxin. Socrates follows the ship. Gem apologizes for not protecting Ana. Ana wonders how Gem, “a Black Mormon kid from landlocked Utah” became interested in the ocean (63). Ester gives Ana a squid she found in the freezer, knowing Ana would want to give Socrates a treat. Then, Ester says Hewett wants to see Ana and Gem and that Hewett is sick.

In Chapter 12, Caleb is secured with zip-ties. A member of House Orca named Linzi Huang is present. Ana notes that Orcas are medics but also serve as “our school conscience.” She feels this will keep the angry students from torturing Caleb, though...
