Chapters 1-3 Summary

The book takes place during the Viet Nam War and tells the story of John Kelly and his love for a woman caught in a nightmarish situation.

The Prologue begins with the preparations for a demolition. Divers are placing C4 charges on a structure below the water's surface with John Kelly supervising. The men are highly trained.

At the same time, Colonel Robin Zacharias and Lieutenant Colonel Jack Tait were flying a mission in their F-105G Thunderbird. Their mission was to protect a group of fighter-bombers who are taking out an SA-2 site. They had made their plans carefully and were following them. When the bombers dropped their canisters and turned to head for their base, they were subjected to unexpected red tracer fire. Their aircraft is hit and Tait is killed.
