Summary
In Chapter 1, Maju is introduced as a live-in nanny in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Maju kidnaps Cora, the child in her care. As she leaves the building where she lives with Cora and Cora's parents, she is paranoid about seeming suspicious, even though it is normal for her to go out with Cora. She avoids taking a taxi so that none of the drivers might recognize them and report having seen them. Cora is excited about taking the bus.
In Chapter 2, Cora’s mother Fernanda is having sex with her lover Yara, while ignoring a phone call from her husband Cacá. In the narration, she notes that female bononos in the Congo basin have sex with each other, and compares what they do with what she and Yara do.
