Summary

In Chapter Nine: "Martin and Big Head Lawrence" shifts back to young Arlo. Brother Birch and Molly force him to participate in field service, but Arlo continues to doubt a God that wants him to neglect parts of his humanity. During this, Arlo recalls when his gym teacher wanted him to climb rope, but Arlo was too scared. That was the day he met one roommate, Martin who is fully blind and new TSL. He taught Arlo the word revenge, as well as other words and things Molly refused to. Arlo also met Big Head Lawrence and learned about a group of bullies named the Deaf Devils that teachers refused to deal with. The boys also mentioned a place called Dogwood where bad students are sent, never to be seen again.
