Chapter 1 Summary

In Chapter One, the reader meets the protagonist, Daisy Adams, a graduate student who works several jobs to support herself and her brother as she works on her thesis. One such money making scheme involves writing a cookbook for dog treats. After the publishing of her book, she nagged Steve Crow until he agreed to give her a five minute slot on his radio station. Every Monday, she shares her advice for dog cuisine for five minutes. She enjoys moderate success and more fan mail than any other station employee.

However, she stills suffers from money shortages. When she learns that the traffic reporter, Frank Menken, hit a garbage truck and broke his leg, she jumps at the opportunity to temporarily fill the position. With some trepidation, she approaches Steve about the job. Inwardly, Steve fears Daisy is not right for the job...
