Summary

In Chapter 1, Lynette's brother, Kenny, woke her up. Kenny had developmental disabilities. Though he was two years older than Lynnette, he had "the mind of a three-year-old" (2).

Lynette prepared for her job at the bakery. Then she helped Kenny get ready. On their way out, Lynette talked to her mother, Doreen, who was smoking on the couch. Doreen said she could not help with Kenny today, and might not go to work. While Lynette waited for her car to start, she told Kenny they would "have a lucky day" (6).
