Forest

The forest is a symbol of the unknown and of healing. When Emma paints, she starts with the three girls who disappeared against a background of sky and ground. Then, she covers them with layers of paint creating the three-dimensional forest into which the pictures of the girls disappeared, just like the girls themselves disappeared. Emma has told only one of her friends that the girls are hidden in the paintings. When Emma returns to the camp, she senses when the car enters the forest that she is entering the unknown.

When Franny propositions Emma to return to the camp as an instructor, she tells Emma that the forest has healing properties. Franny claims that returning to the camp helped her to overcome her feelings about what had happened to them.
