Summary

Part II: The Ripping begins with Chapter 11 in which Cassie recalls how her father used to toss her and her brother, Sam, in the air because they wanted to fly, but that stopped when Vosch arrived at Camp Ashpit and killed their father. Sam knows their father is dead and decides he is now a soldier, but he yells at Cassie for allowing their father to die. When Teacup claims their father was soft, Zombie breaks up the fight between the younger children and insists Teacup bunk with him until Ringer returns.

In the hallway, Zombie reminds Cassie that she and Sam are not the only ones to suffer such a tragic loss. To Cassie's question if Ringer left, Zombie assures her that Ringer will return because they do not have a backup plan. Back in the room, Cassie admits...
