Summary

In Chapter 26, Ross feels there is something wrong with his marriage. He makes tea for Mel before work the next day, but he is not entirely reassured. Ross then goes to court and follows Cynthia out for lunch to talk to her. He is worries about the rules of whether to eat but settles on a teacake (that Cynthia pays for). Cynthia feels Nigel was conducting a “witch hunt” in relation to Alexander's suicide. She says her relationship with Wesley was nothing except that he made a good companion to events and parties when Roger had no interest in going. Roger was happy with the arrangement because it meant he attended only events he enjoyed. Cynthia believes Wesley was self-centered. She says most people are probably equally selfish but “some of us are better at hiding our selfishness than others” (209).
