Summary

Chapter 28 is dated May 1001. Aldred arrives at the first church on his route in the village of Trench. Wynstan has ordered the priest to deny entrance to the church. Aldred improvises, conducting a prayer service outside. At the appropriate time, Edgar uses a pulley system to raise the effigy. The people have never seen a pulley system, and it seems that the effigy of Saint Adolphus is rising on its own. As Aldred calls on Saint Adolphus to help anyone in need, a woman confesses to stealing a knife. Aldred asks the victim to forgive, then continues his prayers. The monks pass around bowls and collect money. Aldred invites them to Whitsunday service in Dreng's Ferry. They continue the process for two weeks before returning to their home church. Aldred can only hope visitors will come to them now.
