The Evening and the Morning Overview

Ken Follett's historical novel Morning and Evening serves as the prequel to the Kingsbridge series as Follett tells the reader how the town of Kingsbridge grew from a tiny village called Dreng's Ferry. In this novel, Edgar is a skilled builder who is determined to hone his craft. Ragna is an intelligent noblewoman who becomes the victim of a wealthy but brutal family, and Aldred is an honorable monk who has visions of building a great library. Each of the characters interacts with the people of the region as they endure hardships and celebrate victories. The novel's main themes are the role of religion during the time period, survival, corruption, personal accountability, the importance of family relationships, gender roles, and destiny.
