Milly's Watch

Milly wears her grandfather’s old watch even though it no longer tells time. The watch symbolizes her wish for order and precision in her chaotic family. She feels that wearing a bit of her family’s legacy will bring that into her life. The watch connects her to that.

The fact that the watch does not tell time symbolizes that the family’s legacy has ended. The family’s legacy does not fit her as symbolized by the watch being too big for her. She does not need it to bring order and precision to her life. She can do that on her own. Milly realizes this at the end of the narrative and stops wearing the watch.
