Summary

Chapter 8 is written from Aubrey’s perspective. She and Milly are eating desert at Sweetfern Bakery. Milly wants to know if they should tell anyone that Jonah is not their cousin before their lunch with Mildred. Aubrey is hesitant and says that they have more important problems. She is worried about her father, having to interact with Mildred, and the lack of news from Thomas. After the Fourth of July celebration, she had stayed awake thinking about how an unknown action of hers created unintended consequences. Her guilt has caused her not to talk to her mother much.
