The Ferry

Milly, Jonah, and Aubrey take a ferry to the island. This is where they first meet in person. It is also where the author foreshadows that Jonah is an imposter and that he and Milly are going to become a couple. Jonah does not describe Milly as a cousin would. Milly asks about secrets and says that it is possible that he has his own and he is keeping someone else’s.

The ferry serves as the means of transportation that takes them from their old word to their new one as part of their growing process. At the end of the narrative, each of them has a ticket to return home, but they do not because their journey is not over.
