Summary

In Chapter 1, Naomi arrives at the home of James and Kristina Culver. Their daughter, Madison, has been missing for three years. The Culvers have hired Naomi to search for her. Naomi is a private investigator who specializes in finding missing children. James says he wishes they had known about Naomi sooner. Naomi looks over Madison's room, noting that she likes to draw. She also notes that the sleeves of all of Madison's sweaters are frayed, and Kristina says Madison had constantly picked at them. Naomi warns Kristina that Madison is probably dead by now, but Kristina says she cannot believe that. Naomi says that, if Madison is found alive, she will need an enormous amount of support.

Naomi goes to the Skookum National Forest where Madison disappeared while the family was looking for a Christmas tree. She had simply vanished and a snowstorm...
