Summary

In “Chapter Six,” Ashley and her mother exercise in the morning. Ashley asks if she can stay home from school because she is depressed about Stanford, but her mother says no. Her father calls his brother, Ronnie, who lives in the house they grew up in, which is in South Central right next to the vacuum repair store he inherited from their mother. Ashley’s father urges Ronnie to come stay with them, or to at least send his daughter, Morgan, but Ronnie refuses to leave. Morgan and Ashley are the same age and live less than 20 miles from one another, but they are not close. Ashley watches the news and sees a looter running out of a building with boxes of shoes. When she gets to school, she notices that LaShawn is wearing brand new shoes and cruelly suggests that he stole...
