Thelma and Louise

When Mia is a newborn, her mother tells her that they are the next Thelma and Louise. These are two characters in a film by the same name, and a main theme of the film is the value of female friendships. As such, this reference to the film exemplifies this main theme of this novel: that female relationships are important and true. The film also explores sexual abuse, a theme common to the novel as well.

Pink Floral Couch

The pink floral couch represents a tie from the past to the present. Liz gets this couch used, and the girls keep it in their house. They spend a lot of time on it. As couches are considered comfortable, it represents the comfort of their home even though it is not fancy both during Liz’s life and after.
